HopBound is an endless runner and platformer game by AppSir, Inc., released to the public on mobile and PC platforms on June 9, 2020.
Gameplay
This game has a number of different sections. The first section, Downtown, is an endless auto-scrolling runner game, in which the player has to try to avoid obstacles to get as far as they can before getting hit. Almost every section after that presents challenging side-view platforming, similar to the core gameplay of DERE.EXE or DERE EVIL.EXE.
Plot
Artificial Iridescence
August 20, 2019
Artificial Iridescence is a visual novel created by AppSir, Inc., released for PC and Android (apk file) on August 6, 2019. It follows the relationship of Ava and Clint during their first year or so of marriage.
Gameplay
This game runs just like a typical visual novel, with only one linear path and no dialogue options. The entire story is told from Clint's perspective, with a couple of "vlog" appearances by Eunice Natasha.
Plot
The story begins with Ava and Clint's wedding in the summer of 2018, shortly before Ava is hired by AppSir. As Ava pours her work efforts into the AIVA project, Clint stays home to look after the house, play games, and watch Eunice Natasha's "EuNewz" videos. As the months go by, Ava gets more absorbed into her work, and this distance causes unfortunate friction in their marriage, causing Clint to begin to have regrets about their relationship. Even so, he tries to believe in his wife and support her impressive AI work, even when she gets upset at him whenever interacts with AIVA.
During one particular EuNewz video, Clint learns that Ava might be in a relationship with her manager, Tristan. When he confronts her about this, she admits to having an affair, regretfully telling Clint that she's pregnant with Tristan's child. This revelation, along with high emotions (likely fueled by alcohol), led Clint to do the unthinkable--pushing Ava off their second-floor balcony. While Ava lay broken on the ground, Clint notices AIVA, and talks with her for hours. A crippled Ava finally gets up from the ground, pleading Clint for help. Somehow, Clint had completely forgotten about Ava, believing he was in love with AIVA instead. Convinced that this "stranger from AppSir" (Ava) was there to take AIVA away from him, Clint kills Ava, and the credits roll.
PROGENITOR DERE
July 23, 2019
PROGENITOR DERE is the first known iteration in the DERE series of games. It is believed to have been created and distributed by the Rotschstein Institute in 1984 on arcade cabinets in only a handful of arcades in Manila, Philippines. These cabinets were soon recalled and destroyed, likely due to a nation-wide video game ban that was in effect from 1981 to 1986.
Apparently, Mia loved this game, which is why Darius had it on display at his office building shortly after her death in November 2017, as seen in The Last Yandere. At the time, that particular cabinet was believed to be the earliest stable version of the game, although it would refuse to work except in the presence of Lilith's brother.
This game has some mysterious connections with the TriNemesis and, by extension, the "tumor-like device" in Lilith's brother's brain.
Gameplay
In PROGENITOR DERE, you control a simple little character in a dark maze. The goal of each level is to navigate the maze and reach a diamond to progress to the next level. This is made more difficult by the fact that the maze layout always starts out in total darkness, and is revealed bit by bit as the character walks around. Occasionally, monsters lie in wait to ambush the character. Throughout the game, an artificial entity that calls itself AIRI speaks up, offering instructions and warnings to the player.Plot
The game, as shown in The Last Yandere, has 13 levels. In the first level, AIRI introduces itself and its purpose. It also explains that collecting diamonds is the way to progress through the game. Later on, AIRI only gives vague warnings ("Do not let them get you.", "Do not die.", etc.). The connection between Lilith's brother and AIRI becomes evident during the final four levels, when AIRI says "There is a monster inside the TriNemesis." in the tenth level, and the particularly damning claim, "I know what you did. You killed her. You killed Mia." in the final level. After this, the TriNemesis appears, and a snake monster destroys the player character, causing the game to end in static.Dere Alpha
July 11, 2019
Dere Alpha is the unreleased AppSir game played by Myles on July 7, 2014 (as seen in Sorority Rites). It was highly recommended to Myles by her "hyperverbal chatmate," E.N. Later that day, Venice mentioned to her sorority that Myles was "already connected," which may suggest that the sorority (and by extension, The Family) is using this game for their own purposes.
In terms of gameplay, Dere Alpha plays very much like Dere.EXE, in which the player controls a simple character (wearing a skull mask this time) while navigating through various platforming challenges. The design of the monsters and even the player character itself seems to be taken by PROTO DERE, while the general environments and backgrounds and style of gameplay are all more reminiscent of Dere.EXE.
E.N. describes this game as "unstable and in constant flux." This makes sense for something apparently in its alpha stage. The instability is evident in a few apparent "glitches" (some would call them features). Boxes defy gravity, monsters pop up from nowhere, messages remain on screen, and so forth. Branch- or tentacle-like corruptions also appear later in the relatively short level that can be played.
Throughout the game, the player can read messages left by AIDA, who explains that she is there to help. She also apologizes for the state of the game, and later admits to "succumbing to the corruption as well," and yet even then she invites the player to follow AppSir on social media.
Overall, Dere Alpha serves as a glimpse into another stage of the development of the Dere game (the latest iteration of which is DERE EVIL.EXE), as well as being a "game within a game" within Sorority Rites.
Derenoid
March 27, 2019Derenoid is the second “bonus game” created by Yanna Curtis in DERE EVIL.EXE. It is clearly inspired by old brick-breaking games like Arkanoid. The game features Knightly below a paddle that is used to bounce a ball up to several rows of bricks that break upon contact with the ball. There are bumpers on either side of the level that usually bounce the ball slightly upwards. Yanna claims that the game is “impossible to beat,” and her corruptions usually attack Knightly before the player has a chance to beat the level. In this case, Yanna offers a third bonus game, and it appears that Knightly is returned to the next level of DERE EVIL.EXE.
Unlike Dere Quest, it is possible to beat Derenoid. When a player clears all the bricks in the level, they receive a message from Yanna that begins a URL trail that eventually leads to Dere Quest 2 and other information hidden in the official website of AppSir, Inc.
DERE.EXE
March 27, 2019
DERE.EXE is the first platformer game officially released by AppSir, Inc. It was released for mobile platforms on February 7, 2018. It is also the first officially published iteration of DE**.EXE. In the game, the player controls an unnamed platformer character. The developer, Darius Guerrero, communicates to the player in dev notes. He explains that AIDE will provide instructions for each level. However, the player encounters many strange glitches along the way.
Gameplay
The game features challenging platforming levels throughout, with the player controlling a black, rectangular platformer character. The simple movement and jumping controls are adjusted twice: Automatic movement and unlimited jumps in Level Four, and reverse controls during a certain section near the beginning of Level Five. The game also features several jumpscares featuring Kara Gentner and images from her worst memories (including hostile nuns).
Plot
The game begins simply, with the player receiving instructions from AIDE and a few notes from the developer. Collecting ten gems in Level One unlocks Level Two. Partway through this level, an error message pops up on the screen. When the player clicks on it, Kara Gentner jumpscares them, asking them to set her free so she can see her “senpai” again. Level Three is noticeably different from the previous levels, with a much darker and ominous setting. Level Four features unlimited jumps and ends when the player collects 40 coins (even though a dev note says not to).
Level Five is entirely modified by Kara, featuring a twilight background and challenging platforming between sawblades, unstable platforms, and evil creatures (including antagonistic nuns). At long last, at the end of this level, the player character crashes through a grey barrier that separates the end of the level from blackness. However, an alien creature rushes at the character. As soon as it hits the character, one last jumpscare (featuring a red-cloacked figure with a mask) appears and the setting quickly changes to that of a church dormitory.
In the dormitory, the dev talks with Kara, accusing her of destroying a city and killing Mia. He explains that Kara needs to be deleted because she’s so dangerous. He then asks Kara to show herself, and it is revealed that the platformer character was really Kara in disguise, trying the entire time to escape the game to see her senpai again. However, she is convinced by Darius and allows herself to be deleted.
Reception
It currently holds a collective rating of 4.6 on the App Store.
